I can honestly say this annoys the hell out of me too. Although mine isnt as bad as yours, it's still annoying.

it is due to the z buffer and poor opengl implementation

unfortunately most cards set the zbuffer relative to the color depth... (16 bit color yeilds a 16bit zbuffer, 32bit color yeilds a 24 or 32 bit zbuffer)... most nvidia cards esp, will not allow you the option of setting a zbuffer for a specific depth (that is different from your color depth)...

often, setting a opengl card to 32 bit, and setting your desktop to 32 bit as well would correct a certian amount of this in tribes, though again, some cards would still set the zbuffer to 24 bit...(and thats the reason that people found setting your card to 32 bit color would help somewhat... but that was a few years ago, when people began using opengl in t1 ;o...)

if you have radeon you can set this (some driver version require a tweaker to do so), and you can set your color dpth to 16 bit (best for tribes) and the zbuffer to 32 bit (will help compensate)... but again this might only get rid of _most_ of these instances

basically to sum up all the shit said:

use a voodoo card for tribes

opengl sucks

that shit happens on everything, i was playing GTA3:VC and u can see it on the buildings and the jagged shit around the base of the buildings, its all there

which is mainly why i hate opengl, every game that i have seen in opengl/d3d has it =\

Poorly written engine.

No, glide was written for games, OpenGL was not. If you have a good voodoo card and a game like Tribes, you don't see that kind of shit. I wish they had developed Glide more, but friggin OpenGL owns the market now.

Umm, yeah that's true. Of course you don't see that kind of shit for a game optimized for Glide running in Glide. You also don't see that kind of shit for a game optimized for OpenGL when running in GL. If you do, it's the engine's flaw. Plenty of games run fine in GL. OpenGL is not worse, and is a lot better now than Glide was then.

Glide was written so that 3dfx could more or less dominate the video card market which at the time they had sole possesion of. OpenGL is not worse than Glide...I sincerely doubt that it would be an industry standard if it were that bad.

And uh, "jagged shit" that happens in games is due to lower resolutions and a lack of anti-aliasing. If you think that Glide magically did away with jaggies, you have some severe vision issues.

not quite, opengl is allowing alot more things than glide did, but only b/c is has been longer in development, and somewhat do to the trickle-down effect of features... plus opengl does have its problems, you do see that kind of stuff in games optimized for opengl, you just see it less (some people may not see it all, b/c the instances are mostly stamped out, but its far from perfect, and not entirely consistent)

opengl was not originally designed for games, and i as well believe that if glide had not been killed off it would best opengl for gaming today

the death of glide was *aided* by the promise of opengl b/c it wooed gamers with the idea that an API designed for a more professional level 3d rendering and workstation processing would soon provide far more impressive results (than its main alternative at the time)in games, but it actually ending up taking some more time than expecteed to get there...

not to mention glide was much easier for programmers to implement, which mean some smaller/newer/etc companies could produce impressive games... just like tribes for instance ;o -- a small company with a good idea, but perhaps not much experience in programming 3d games could still produce something worthwhile...

My point was this though...

3dfx is dead and has been for quite awhile. Because of that, Glide is dead and OpenGL has come much further. This making GL no worse than Glide, and better in some ways.

My ATI Radeon has none of those problems.. maybe you should write nVidia and ask them to fix their drivers

As far as GL glitches in t1, I don't have any problems on my gf3 either, but it seems most people do.
