My 30GB IBM DeskStar (7200rpm, ATA100) crashed yesterday so I'm looking for a new hard drive today. I probably won't go with IBM since this is the second one I've had from IBM that has crashed.
My system is a bit old, but it is capable of ATA100. The motherboard is an Abit KT7A-Raid.
I don't need a rediculous amount of space. As I said, my existing HD was 30GB and I had 5 or 6 gigs free after 2+ years.
What I would like is an 8MB buffer.
What ya think?
Western Digital JB-Series Special Edition drives. You can find them in 40 - 200GB.

I agree, go with the WD special edition, they have 8MB cache :o
w00t! I just order the 80GB WD Special Edition (8MB buffer) from Staples.com for $110 :), including 1 day shipping.
thank you for your responses!

Cadaver 01-10-2003, 01:47 AM shit I'm having problems with my 60gb ibm deskstar now too.. only been using it about 10 months and it sounds like it's going to have a heartattack even after a reformat :(
yeah i remember 2-3 years ago there was a huge case of desktars dying and IBM did a massive recall.
I stay away from IBM.
Maxtor and WD. I think Seagate is ok too.

hmmm..... mine is just about that old. i wonder if they would replace it?
NightTrain 01-10-2003, 08:18 AM Before the first of the year, you could go to IBM's site and check your warranty by entering the serial number of your HD. I just went and looked today and got this message:
The IBM Warranty and Returns site will no longer be available as of 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST) on 31-December 2002. On 1-January, 2003, IBM will transfer all support for Hard Disk Drives to Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Inc. On January 6th, 2003, customers can continue RMA service via the Hitachi End User RMA site, located at http://www.hgst.com/warranty/.
The Hitachi site looks about the same as the IBM did before so you might give it a try.
Cadaver 01-10-2003, 05:05 PM just did another reformat and it's still making loud noises, POS!! Being that it is still functional would they not accept it if I sent it in for a new one? It's just about a year old. IBM Deskstar 7200rpm/60GB
holy mother of pearl. i just went to that hitachi site and found out my hard drive is eligable for free replacement. and i just received my new hd today. wootzors?
iNVAR 01-11-2003, 12:34 AM try recording the noise for us.
I have a question about hard drive performance. When I first installed my OS (W2K PRO) on my new hard drive, I benched it with ATTO and got terrible results - to be expected since I hadn't installed any VIA drivers. After installing the VIA4in1's (v4.43), my hard drive benched quite well - almost 40MB/s writes and over 40MB/s reads. Then after installing all three service packs for W2K and rebenching, my read and write times are poor, especially the read times - less than 20MB/s. Have I forgotten to do something? Am I missing some drivers or reg tweaks?
Probably your motherboard
You should update your service pack first THEN install teh 4 in 1's. I'm thinking that the 4-in-1's installed new IDE bus drivers, thus making your HD work faster, but since the service packs were released before the latest 4in1, perhaps the service pack replaced it with old drivers/settings?

hot diggity dog. you are most wise. i re-installed the 4in1's after installing the service packs and wha-la, my write and read speeds are back to 40MB/s. thank you.
Its "voila", French, and pronounced "vwa-la".
;)

That's the funniest comment I hear... "IBM sucks, but WD is awesome"
Get a clue guys, IBM bailed WD out a few years ago and started manufacturing 95% of all WD drives, internal and external both. Only thing different was the casing they used. Only until mid year of 02 did WD reimplement their own circuit boards and electronics, but guess what, it's still IBM on the inside for the platters and head assembly as well as all the data encoding and such.
