Ghosting different drives?

My mom is getting a new computer that I plan on setting up for her over Thanksgiving. That new computer will have a 60gb drive with it and there is no fucking way that she will ever need that much space. I, on the other hand, could really make use of that. So, I have some older IBM drive that I could stick in the comp for her.

However, I want all the software that comes with this new computer to still be available to her. So, can I do a direct copy from her new hard drive to the one that I stick in? What would be the best way to do this? What program should I use?

hope your drive is just as fast, otherwise you're shafting her by swapping :)

and yeah, you should be able to ghost from the new computer's drive to your old one. or use drive image pro, i think that'd work as well.

Actually, I will be shafting her, but she won't care. :)

She'll be astounded by the speed of her new comp. I think it's a Celeron 1.8 or something with 256 mb of ram. Currently, she's running a P2 266 with 128 mb of ram in WinXP. So, anything is lightyears ahead of her current setup. Oh yeah, she also is running on an old 5.25" hard drive. I have no idea how slow that thing is, but she wont care about losing the speed that I'll be taking.

Thx for the input invar. :bigthumb:

Most OEMs package a "Restore CD" with the system that will automatically take the system down to factory-ship status, like you just opened the box on a new machine. It should work regardless of the hard drive, as long as the drive has enough space for the sometimes bloated OEM installs.

Just an alternative to Ghost...

Ghost is your best bet. Just hook both drives up to same pc and ghost the new drive to the old one and then switch 'em.
