Friend is having a problem, here's what's going on:

Regular usr pci fax -> USR pci v92 performance

-Took the old modem out, put the new one in.
-Booted up.
-Got the typical "new hardware" systray icons (winXP).
-Windows chimes in saying it couldn't install "PCI Serial Port" because "The data is invalid"
-Click 'finish'.
-Go ahead and install the drivers for the new modem.
-Tells me they're not signed.
-Try to connect anyways and the modem won't dial or respond to query.
-Make sure I have everything setup right and try again to no avail.
-Try every PCI slot open.
-Take a shot in the wild and say it's the drivers.
-Pop in the old modem, too, and go to windows update and get the new drivers.
-Hook the phone line back up to the new modem and try again: nothing.
-Take both modems out and boot up: Fine.
-Just new modem: and i get the "The data is invalid"
-The new modem has a good deal of hesitation when I click "properties" for it.

WindowsXP Home
Athlon XP 1800+
Soyo Dragon kt333 ultra
1280mbs mushkin pc2700

Setting\Control Panel\System\Device Manager\Communication Ports
Whatcha got there?
How about under System Devices\PCI Bus?

You need to uninstall the old drivers before you install a new device. This is true with most hardware.

Tip: USR modems suck big donkey balls. Not trying to be a jerk... they just do.
