seems like alotta fellow tribers havent every played around with these.

the newsgroups contain everything. let me say that again. the newsgroups contain everything.

with that being said, this thread will be about the newsgroups - how to set up a newsreader, how to use it, what to look for, where to look, etc.

the party starts soon here in the Newsgroup Shrine
:bigthumb:

Newsgroups rool! Agent roolz even more ('specially since it's ha><ored...)! :D

For retrieving binaries Agent is without a doubt the best there is.

BTW, don't forget to check out alt.games.starsiege.tribes

For all you @home newsgroup newbies here is a little present for you. Keep in mind these lists might contain servers that do not work and some may be faster than others.
Also, the lists are not mine, i've simply reposted there contents as I found them with the original author's comments and what not intact.

Whoever posted about Forte Agent being the best newsreader is dead on. Easiest and fastest newsreader out there. It will automatically decode binaries for you as well. I suggest you download the full version from their website and then uhh, give www.astalavista.box.sk a visit. ;) If you need some more help with this, find me in #nutshot.

Enjoy the list (Long)

Metro

BTW if you are not on @home, don't bother trying any of these servers, they won't work for you.

-- WingNut's @Home Newserver Tips --
- September 1999 -

I have noticed that the many of the repost requests originate
from people that use the @Home cable modem service.
This is mostly due to @Home's terrible message retention
times. (Posts will expire off some servers in less than 12 hours)

I am posting this message in an attempt to help those that use
@Home find the missing parts of a post without having to flood the
group with more repost requests. I am NOT saying that this method
will find every single missing post, but you should have a very
good success rate. Some may say, "why go to all this trouble?
I only need ONE part". First of all: it's easy change news servers.
Second: if you ask for a repost, you "May or May Not" get it.
Third: By changing servers, you'll be able to download it faster
than you would have gotten it if you'd had to wait on the repost.

@Home has newservers located in many different regions of the
United States and Canada. All of them transfer messages to one
another, and have the same group listings. The differences between
the news servers, is message retention. I've noticed that some of the

@Home news servers keep their messages on their server longer than
others, and some do a better job of getting complete posts.

As an @Home subscriber, you have access to any news server that
is ran by @Home. (They do not document this, nor do they encourage
it. So don't call @Home Tech support asking about it, they will
just tell you that it isn't possible)

To use one of the servers in the list, just change your default
newserver address in your newsreader. (Yours should be set to "news"
by default). If you are not familiar on doing this, search your
newsreaders help file for "adding a news server".
(Warning: If you use AGENT, it may reset all your message pointers)

I prefer Microplanet Gravity because it has "built in" support for
using multiple news servers. You can change from one server to the
next while still maintaining your message pointers.

The format of the list has changed a little since the last list. I
now have
started including the IP address along with the news server name.
This is to help me to prevent adding dupes to the list, and to cut
down
on the list of duplicate names that are emailed to me.

This is a list of @Home Servers that I have put together.
Taking all the latest postings available, I've combined
them into this alphabetized North American list.

Please feel free to post this version wherever you see fit,
But please leave contents intact. I would like to thank all
of you who have supplied lists of servers in the past.

If you have any @Home Servers that are not listed in v2.5,
please feel free to E-Mail me at: The_Real_ET@hotmail.com

I take no responsibility for non-active or dead servers.
I have tried most (95%) of the servers and they are active.
Remember, some servers have better retention than others,
so try a few out, or better yet, use multiple servers at
the same time. By having multiple servers active, you will
cut back the Repost Requests.

I hope this helps.

Enjoy,
ET

I know...
But I think it's perfect for DD :D

I don't hit up Usenet much these days...
If I do, I usually use OE just because it's there. I'm too lazy to track down a good reader for something I don't bother with much.

don't know if anyone has said this since i'm only on page 2 but.... alt.2600.* is good bet for finding some *cough*goodstuff*cough* to download.

er, right click on the group name in the left column listing and do "full update"

and as far as .par filez go. if their server iz crappy enough not to post most of the .rar parts, how the shit are they gonna get the .par filez to fill the holez in? ;/

Well after you do some investigation on par files you will see how this has and will cut down on repost requests.

"I need part 15" "I need part 20" "I need part 9"

So do you repost those three parts for those three separate people? Or wouldn't it be easier to just repost one par file so all three get the fill at the same time?

Granted if your missing more then a couple of posts then your news server sucks and you will continue to have a hard time getting reposts. But if your news server is just a little sucky and you only need one or two parts then PAR files are a great thing.

Grab it questions:

once you see newsgroups you have to 'subscribe' to them.
then they are in the left window. now you can either click 'update groups' or right click on a specific group to get all posts.

Grab it is not supporting posting... just downloading.

I use Forte Agent if I ever have something to post.

MISSING PARTS

if you are missing a part - check the groups first.

ex:

say you are in group alt.binaries.pics

check to see if there is a group called alt.binaries.pics.d
post in that group that you need the parts

as for posting parts for other peeps - only post one part in a message

i started on oe. it was great for reading and post, but for binaries - give agent a try

aren't 2600 ppl a hackers magazine that got banned from linking decss on their website?

hardly deal with binaries (i don't view pr0n :blah: ), so i think i'll stick with oe.
