Good netbook?

So I'm looking to get my Dad a netbook for Christmas. All he does is check sports scores.

Are they all pretty much the same?

Theyre all the same. I like Asus, personally.

Just don't overpay. You should pay no more than $200 for a 1.6ghz/1GB/160GB netbook with xp home

The asus netbooks have a major problem with the AC adapter frying up soon after initial use (within a month or two, sometimes right out of the package). Asus has been out of stock for the AC adapters for a while, so you're pretty much fucked if that happens and will have to wait a while.

Also, you can easily upgrade to 2GB memory for $20, you have to dig around on amazon to find good memory deals. It's worth it though.

I have the compaq one

screen is good, keyboard is ok, wireless is good, battery life is not so hot.

it only has 1G ram and it runs like it

I am currently typing this post on an Acer Aspire One.
Here's the issues I have after owning it for about 6 months or so.....

RAM upgrade (much needed) is ridiculously difficult and it only holds a max of 1.5GB. You have to, basically, disassemble the laptop to do the upgrade.

Video streaming lag. If he wants to watch porn (of course he does) then he'll have a rough go of it. Videos load but the computer can't keep up with the workload. The video freezes while audio continues even if the buffer is full. It's just a weakness of this netbook.

Get the full 10" screen. Don't get the 8.9" like me. The computers are the same size but I have about 3/4" of bezel around the screen. I'd rather have that area taken up by actual screen real estate.

No bluetooth. Never thought I'd use it so I didn't care. I have an HTC Touch that I would rather tether with bluetooth than a bulky cable.

Nothing else. That's it. I really love having it and since I deploy all of the time, it's nice to lug around 3 pounds of shit rather than 10 pounds.

AC adapters are rather standardized with most netbooks now.

You can tether over wifi. I do it all the time.

No WiFi on the HTC Touch. :( My wife's HTC Touch Pro does and we can use it fairly well. It just sucks the battery down like a $2 hooker during a port call. I have much better results with a standard cable.....which I'm on now, BTW.

I have the Asus Eee PC 1000he, and it just rocks. Bump the ram to 2gb (absurdly easy with these) and I had Win7 on it, which I've been extremely pleased with.

That said, if you have $600 I'd look at the Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810T-8679 11.6-Inch Blue Laptop. It's like a netbook with real guts, the same portability, and the same battery life (8 hrs). It includes a real Core 2 Duo processor, 4gb of ram, a 320gb hard drive... everything you need for a perfectly satisfactory computer experience, except no CD/DVD drive. (you can always add an external... and regular netbooks don't have them either, so no loss that way) The 11.6 screen can handle HD video, too (720p), and has more usable resolution than the netbook. (The standard 10" netbook's 1024x600 resolution sometimes results in warnings about programs that want at least 1024x680.)

Amazon.com: Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810T-8679 11.6-Inch Blue Laptop - Over 8 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium): Computer & Accessories

To say I was impressed with that little sucker is an understatement. I still love my 1000he, but I may end up picking up one of those things at some point.

That's really model specific then...
I have the AAO d250. Ram upgrade is super easy, but does only support up to 2 gigs. Video streaming is fine unless you're trying to do HD content.
The stock 3 cell battery was shit, but I ordered a 6 cell and loaded windows 7 on it and I've been plenty happy with it since.
