When you play an RTS you use a "fingertip" grip, the smaller the mouse the better. High sensitivity is also used, so you dont really move your whole arm, it's all wrist. A small mouse is perfect for this. It's basically the opposite of FPS where low sensitivity and big movements are better.

Other things (turn off mouse accelerations/smoothing)
Get a nice mouse pad
 
I use a QcK+ pad, and I use a logitech G1. I'd say its about the same size as the salmosa. Also, anyone who doesn't turn off accel is nuts.
