Need some good DVD capturing/ripping software

Anyone know what I should be looking for? I need to rip some (copyrighted) DVDs to .avi or .mov for film reference.

The ability to capture clips instead of ripping the whole disk is a plus.

I was previously told that DVDshrink would be good, but that just shrinks the file and outputs it to a .vob, which is still DVD format.

I tried to import a DVD into your web site, but nothing happened.

Did you read the FAQs there or ask them for help. Those are the gurus over there....

4. Edit
5. Export
6. ???
7. Profit!

Some quick searching reveals that a program called Smartripper can do the DeCSS thing. Is that the piece of software you'd advise to use? Or is there something better?

I'm not going to bother to see what it can convert too, but it works well and does convert to ipod format

I've yet to find an easier DVD to avi solution than this:

1. Rip VOBs with DVDFab
2. Encode with AutoGK

DVD Fab (http://dvdfab.com/) + Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/). Convert to format of choice, extract clips as need using your usual softwares. Horrifyingly free, too.
