everyone predicts the end of the world. everyone has been wrong so far. I see no reason as to why they'd be right.
 
They actually did predict their own down fall. They actually predicted that their white faced god would return and it would mark the beginning of the end for their civilization. The time period predicted was the same as Cortes' arrival in the New World.

It's thought that they mistook Cortez and his men as the "white-faced" gods that their own legends claimed had come from the sea in some time well before recorded history, to help rebuild their civilization with knowledge of agriculture, architecture, botany, etc., after some great disaster (some say a flood).

So the theory is Cortez and his men show up, they're white-faced like the legend says, they came from the sea like the legend says, so they were thought to be the return of the gods there to help them and were welcomed with open arms. Unfortunately Cortez then proceeded to nearly wipe the people of the americas right off the planet, slaughtering them, stealing their treasures, destroying pretty much all recorded history of their civilization, etc.

Read up on the legends of Viracocha and Quetzalcoatl and whatnot.
