Obviously. But they could have made the elevator appear to move faster graphically all the while retaining the amount of time necessary to load stuff.

They went for realism as well. An elevator descending at 50mph for 20 seconds to get down one floor is going to appear fake and would be totally stupid. How could you not realize this?
