[lllaaabbbtttttooopp] brief questions

i'm going to buy one. mostly for school/creative purposes, so i'm looking for it to run basic office programs, sony acid, photoshop. i'm not to big into 'multi-tasking' outside of like itunes/firefox/word being open at the same time.

and as an added bonus, i'd be nice if i could finally play like HL2 or something... my current pc (512 ram and some crappy onboard graphics card) hasn't been able to mess with any of those generation of games - but i have no need to play crisis or anything like that.

so all that said, i don't really know much about laptops. for example, i've got two laptops that to me look very similar, bud differ by about $250

Newegg.com - TOSHIBA Tecra A8-S8514 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T7200(2.00GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 1GB DDR2 533 120GB 5400rpm DVD Super Multi Intel GMA950 - Retail ($1000)

Newegg.com - HP Compaq 6715b(RM167UT#ABA) NoteBook AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52(1.60GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 1GB DDR2 667 120GB 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Radeon X1250 IGP - Retail ($769)

Then there's 3 different $800 ones i can't distinguish the merits of

Newegg.com - HP Pavilion DV6629US(GY139UA) NoteBook AMD Mobile Athlon 64 X2 TK-55(1.80GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 2GB 120GB 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 7150M - Retail
Newegg.com - TOSHIBA Satellite A215-S7433 NoteBook AMD Mobile Athlon 64 X2 TK-55(1.80GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 2GB DDR2 667 160GB 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Radeon X1200 IGP - Retail
Newegg.com - TOSHIBA Satellite A215-S4747 NoteBook AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56(1.80GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 1GB 200GB 4200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Radeon X1200 IGP - Retail

I'm also at a loss as to the benefits of vista vs. xp (i don't believe i particularly need vista... at least yet) and would prefer a nice HD around 120gigs, and i suppose 2GB of ram if i ever decide to upgrade to vista. outside of that, I'm looking for advise on particular options. My max is $1,000 but honestly options from $800 - $1000 would be good. Any commentary would be appreciated.

You should be able to get your desktop to play hl2 with minimal upgrades.

i'm sure, cause technically i can now when there isn't very much action going on, but i need this laptop anyway, so i'm focusing on making sure i get it right this time.

do NOT get HP

they have terrible customer service and the laptops themselves are of poor manufacturing quality

Most any $600 laptop should do most everything fine, and a $500 desktop would do the gaming.

Unless you want to go and buy a 12 pound desktop replacement and lug it around with you.

edit: after reading the thread again, you should get the one that has the best specs for the money. Core 2 duos are supposed to be really good, but if you're going to save a chunk with the amd turion, go with it. I have a turion and my system runs fine. Other than that, compare specs side by side, and get the best bang for your buck.

I got this one about a few months ago and I've been loving it:

Newegg.com - ASUS F3 Series F3KA-X1 NoteBook AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56(1.80GHz) 15.4" Wide XGA 1GB DDR2 667 120GB 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 - Retail

It comes in just under 1000 bucks. I paid $999 for it but it's going for $919 now. It's got an awesome video card (512mb dedicated) and runs orange box beautifully at 1280x800 high detail everything, although I didnt really even get it with the intention of doing much gaming on it. It's a pretty good deal for the price imo, the only thing I would say against it is it really needs another 1gb of memory (45 bucks from crucial) and I really dont like the fact that they partitioned the HD.
