MPAA fake download site exposed - vnunet.com

The detective agency used by the Motion Picture Association of America has attempted to lure file sharers to a fake download site that installs spyware on their PCs.

The MiiVi.com site offered downloads of complete movies along with forums for debate, but also offered software purporting to speed up file transfers.

In fact the software checked hard drives for copyrighted material and reported back to the MediaDefender detective agency.

"Unfortunately, with the site down, we cannot analyse the site or this tool, " said Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos.

"But if pirated software was made available for download and had some hidden processes that reported back to an unauthorised third party, it is a good thing that it is offline.

"This looks like a case of 'surfer beware' because pirated software is rarely without a sting in the tale.

"Not only is it illegal, but in this case it allegedly steals information from your system. The old adage 'you don't get something for nothing' rings true once again."

MiiVi.com was registered in February in Media Defender's name. It is not clear how many people have downloaded the software.

Very classy of them to do. I hope they get sued for this kind of shit.
 
anyone heard of play3w player?

i think this is a similar thing, it was "required" to install it to play a torrent movie i dl'ed. but i didn't go through with it.
 
What a crock of fucking bullshit. It's amazing how spammers and the RIAA/MPAA can get away with this shit with ABSOLUTELY NO CONSEQUENCES. Sure a spammer gets busted once in a while, but apparently the RIAA/MPAA have a right to do whatever the fuck they want to your computer and files if they can get their trojan horse installed on your computer. That's bullshit, and against the law, and they need to fucking pay for that.
 
This isn't even what they do, they track bittorrents. I don't know if I believe they were uploading spyware, it was probably a Russian false flag operation.
