my precinct is awesome

1.7 square miles and last night within a span of 5 hours, we got:
a male shot
a male with a seizure (AT the scene of where the above male was shot)
a male with a badly cut hand because he was mad and smashed his hand through a window (the shooting victim above was his brother)
a female raped
a male stabbed

there's a good story that goes along with this though. we were at the scene of the female that was raped. we were about to escort EMS to the hospital when the "shots fired" job came over. often times, those are bullshit, but then we started getting numerous calls. one of our foot posts was at the scene, and put over that there was a large crowd, tons of people running around yelling. we tell EMS to meet us at the hospital and race off the the job doing like 50MPH full lights and sirens. we pull up to the scene and some people run up to us yelling "he ran through the building to the back!! he just shot someone!!"

now, here's where it gets interesting. there are technically FOUR different addresses. 3 of them have entrances facing one street. those 3 buildings ajoin with another building which has 1 entrance facing another street to the rear.

crude drawing:
shooting.gif

anyways, we pull up to door #1 and everyone yells that he went iside to the rear and is going towards #4. we run into #1. in the drawing, there are 3 big circles, which are sort of like courtyards, and they're ALL interconnected. also, within each of these buildings are interconnecting halls. so we're in the courtyard, all 6 or 7 of us walking around, looking for this perp when some guy matching the description comes sprinting towards us from courtyard #2 (we're in #1) we all stop for a second, and stare, dumbfounded, and then one of the cops yells "that's him!" it was like a cartoon. i could've sworn i saw a dust trail from where he ran.

we gave chase and split into 2 groups. i went with one guy into the hallway/fork that goes into #4. right at the turn is an abandoned apt. it was a total fucking mess, with no lights and everything. i thought for sure then that either i was going to get shot, or he was going to get shot, but nope, the whole apt is clear. looks like we lost the guy even though we had a ton of cops swarming the area from all sides. :( all of a sudden, we hear over the radio cops in front of #2 calling for help, so we rush back out front to see this huge crowd of people, at least 50ish. fucking people don't know how to behave. one guy was trying to push his way through and i put my palm on his chest and pushed him back and he had the nerve to (like many of them do) to ask 'Yo, why the fuck are you touching me like that' to which i replied, 'because you're not listening to me when i tell you to move back' and then i pushed him back lightly again. he just stood there and tried to look 'hard' at me. idiots.

i start tossing/pushing back people left and right to disperse the crowd and finally things start to settle down. then some fucking guy decides to have an epileptic seizure right then and there and the shooting victim's brother decides to smash his hand into a window. wtf. anyways, EMS arrives to treat the shooting victim and i leave the scene to go back to the rape victim.

turns out the rape victim knew the guy and he had forced himself on her after she had let him in to use the bathroom. that sucked. we ended up grabbing a whole bunch of stuff out of her apartment for evidence so hopefully we'll put this fucker away.

meanwhile, while i'm at the hospital waiting for the doctors to examine her, a stabbing victim walks into the precinct. the funny thing is he got stabbed way at the other end of the precinct. who knows why he didn't call 911 from there instead of driving or being driven to the precinct.

and this is just MY precinct. we share a radio division with another precinct. they had their own share of stuff two (2 guys stabbed, 3 arrested from it)

fun fun fun!

invar, have you ever considered transfering to a precinct in a civilized area? Seriously.

I've lived in my town for nearly 10 years now and have never heard of a shooting. There's only been a couple of stabbings and no murders. No cops have ever been assaulted, stabbed, shot, or killed. They mostly just pull over speeders and drunk drivers.

Sounds like a much better gig than going into an urban wasteland and risking your life while dealing with the bottom feeders of humanity. I'd imagine that the very people you're supposedly serving don't appreciate your presense at all. That sounds pretty shitty to me, especially when you put your life on the line for them.

Yea, I don't know that I would want to work in the ghetto's of new york for worhtless sacks of shit that survive off of welfare and drug money.

Before the trunked radio systems, I used to listen to my police scanner in New Orleans... that was some seriously entertaining shit and it definitely gave me a new perspective on cops, the bullshit they have to put up with, and the type of person it takes to show up to that kinda job every day.

The foot chases were the best... I'd hear how the cops would all communicate to encircle some nimrod who you knew was fleeing for his life. I especially dug it when the cops on foot would be shouting shit into the radio as they ran at top speed... I'd get an adrenaline rush by proxy, haha.

to give you a serious answer, a lot of people have said the same thing to me, but i dunno, i can't even quite explain it. i actually enjoy the work i do. maybe it's the rush of being involved in a chase, maybe it's the ability to put people in their places after they've been picking on the weaker (rapists, women/wife beaters, shooting victims, etc.). maybe that's the type of person i am. i take the abuse but i keep doing my job... it's sort of like how i get a lot of shit here on TW, especially for being a cop, but i still keep coming back and posting about it even though i said i wouldn't. i guess i'm a glutton for punishment.

yeah, it's irritating to not be appreciated by a lot of people, but once in a while, we are appreciated. people say thank you. people are respectful. people understand we're just trying to our jobs. and that makes a remarkable difference in my day.

now, if i could only get paid some more, i'd be a lot happier.

Don't you think you could get that rush without working in the ghetto with people that are probably never going to amount to anything more than occupants of sing sing?

maybe, maybe not. with all the shit i've been through though, i can handle almost anything with a pretty level head now. it's good experience. so if i ever do leave for somewhere else, i'll be well prepared.

I can see some of the appeal of being a policeman. For the reasons invar mentioned, anyway.

But I guess the cynic in me kills all the positive aspects of it because eventually I wind up seeing cops as human trash collectors. All they're doing is sorting and picking up human trash all day.

That would wear me down quickly, I think.

Honestly, police services should be removed from areas like that. It isn't worth the risk to the cops. It's not like they're going to make a difference, either.

Either that or the police should be given license to employ lethal force at their own discretion in such areas. That might actually accomplish something.
