[Tourist help] Las Vegas

Hey guys,

I'm heading to Vegas in November and apart from all the usual stuff you can find on the touristy websites I was just wondering if there's anything you'd recommend; any particularly good clubs/restraunts/shows/must do things? (I'm staying just off the 'north' strip)

It's my first trip to the US so any other useful info would be much appreciated too (e.g. do you tip on everything?)

Thanks in advance for any/all help! :)

What hotel are you staying at?

I usually stay at The Venetian.

Just went in July. Was awesome.

Id rec. seeing Blue Man Group at The Venetian.

Great Show.

Staying at "Circus Circus". It was the only 'choice' as part of the package deal the girlfriend booked. There's some dodgy reviews of it online, but sure I figure we'll hardly be in the room all that much.

Cheers for the blueman recommendation - meant to see them last time we were in the UK but never got around to it. It got great reviews in the UK too, I assume it's the same show.

[edit] roughly how much gambling did you do? That's a bit of a daft question I suppose but I'm just curious what kinda budget you worked with? [/edit]

I don't know how you plan to get around when you're there but be aware that Circus Circus is pretty damn far away from the rest of the strip. We stayed there the first time we went and after a long day out in the heat the last thing you'll want to do is walk all the way out to the end of the strip.

The hotel itself is showing it's age.. but when I stayed there the room was clean and really that's all that matters in a place like Vegas where you'll be spending all day and night out having fun.

All the shows are really great.

Personally i plan on seeing Blue Man group, and all the Cirque du Soliels in the next few years.

As far as gambling. Unless I go there with more money then usual, i keep my loss limit to 100 dollars. If I get over that I stop. I may still throw a buck or two into slot machines while waiting for someone or something, but my limits 100 give or take a few bucks.

list EXACTLY what you want to do.

Are you a club kiddy?

Do you want a dive bar with punk music?

Do you want to see shows?

Are you looking for expensive dining?

Please advise. There are like 6 locals (including me) who post here.

Or, like I always suggest, do a search for VEGAS on the forum.

That's not great - they said it's close to everything on the strip. I've had a look at maps and it doesn't seem *that* far? We'll be confined to public transport I'm afraid. Worst case we could grab the odd taxi I suppose, had a quick google though and they seem to be more expensive than here.

We're not going till November (!) so it should be cooler by then too, at least on par with our summer here

That's pretty much what I was planning on, was worried it might be too little/day really. cheers :)

I'm not, she is. So we'll probably end up in one or two.

Nope
Do you want to see shows?
Yep
Are you looking for expensive dining?
Yeah but not every night obviously. How expensive are we talking?

Will do!
We're only gonna be there for just over a week but she has a list as long as my arm of things she wants to do/see. I'm just looking for viable alternatives to some of her worse choices of activities/venues/whatnot really.

Thanks guys for all the help, really appreciate it!

Well in terms of a map I suppose it's "close" to everything. That reminds me of when my wife talked me into walking from the strip to the Hardrock casino. "Oh but dear it's really close on this map." Yeah fuck that.

To spend a day on the strip though there is a LOT of walking involved. Each casino is a fucking city unto itself. To get from one side of the road to the other takes more walking than it should. Hell our first trip there we spent the whole thing just walking around viewing the casino's and all the stuff to see.

Be smart about it. If you plan to try and see the whole strip.. take a bus down and work your way back. Have a plan and it won't be so bad. By the end of the day you're going to want to hop a bus or taxi. There are plenty of buses running.. just make sure to have bus fare handy.

Been there, done that. I just meant that it's not like it's a million miles away.

Apparently they said it's "close" to everything and showed her a map and she believed 'em. *shrug* Oh well, it's not the end of the world!

the strip has quite a few double decker busses running back and forth
the lines to get on can be bad tho, be prepared

renting scooters may not be a bad idea

I never thought of that tbh. I had a quick google but none of the rental places seem to mention if you need a licence? (probably a daft question!)

BTW, cabs will only pick you up at designated areas, usually at the hotels/casinos. They will NOT pick you up in the middle of the street, no matter how vigorously you wave them down. They can get ticketed for that.

Oh, and even if it looks close on the map, actually walking it will be fucking far.

Wear comfortable shoes. Just getting from inside a casino to the street is a hike, let alone walking up the strip. I recommend valet parking if you have a rental car since you save the walk to the garage.

Ouch. Cheers for that Kali.

There is always the monorail (monorail, monorail, monorail).

There is a station not far from CC.

Edit: I highly recommend Star Trek: The Experience if you are at all a fan.

Expensive Dining.

I was in Vegas in July and will be returning next year or the following year. Here is a short list of the places I want to go back to. Short, beacause I want to try so many other places.

Delmonico Steakhouse.
Location: Venetian.
Recommendations: New Orleans Barbecue Shrimp, Cow.
I ordered one of the specials. A 120 day aged Kobe beef porterhouse. This may have been the best steak I have ever eaten.

Il Mulino New York.
Location: Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.
Recommendations: Gnocchi with pesto, red snapper, rack of lamb. They have a traditional Italian menu but do yourself a favor and order one of the 5-7 specials that are offered.

SW Steakhouse
Location: Wynn Las Vegas.
Recommendations: Oysters, cow.
If you like oysters you can order a mix of regional favorites. I did, and it was wonderful. The steaks were excellent as well.

Once again, this is expensive dining, at least to me. You will most likely need reservations, although we worked ourselves in, or ate at the bar, which was fine for us(two).
