And the 3 of us were asleep.

Roy City Police woke us up to ask some questions. Nobody knew what the fuck happened. Went outside, our phone box is open. No wires cut (Internet still works).

How common is this?

I think we're being fucked with.
 
i've heard of this happening with old cordless phones when their batteries die but who knows.

I heard you can dial 911 on cell phones, no matter if they are active / have service. The more you knew.
