{Audio help} How to make a song into just the instrumental?

Anyone know how to do this? If I just wanted the beat off of one song how do I get rid of the words?

To be honest I don't even know if it possible but thought I would ask here.

Not possible with compressed formats.

Edit: Pardon, most common compressed formats. You'd need a format encoded with each instrument or vocals and instrument seperated into different streams.

actually there was a plugin for winamp that did a good job of getting the vocals out of the way. I forget what it was called. Like a karaoke plugin or something. It didn't eliminate them all, but imo it was ok.
