[Tech help] Sound stopped working

For some reason my sound has stopped working like overnight.

If I ctrlaltdel I get sound there, but if I open winamp or ventrilo, it says

"Failed to open sound input device, another program may already have it open."
(ventrilo)

Winamp gives me a bad direct sound driver error when I try to play .mp3.

Also, If I try to play a game like Ultima Online, there is no error, but there is no sound either.

What do I do? :(
 
I have but I will restart again.

Like I hear the windows start up sound, I know my sound works, but I get errors when I try to run a program
 
Nope I do not believe I do.

Seriously, what were you working on or doing prior to the problem becoming apparent? If we know what happened leading up to the failure, we might be able to better help you. Computers rarely fail for no reason.
 
Yea I know they dont quit working for no reason thats why I stressed the point that it happened overnight.

I installed sp2 and restarted. On restart it asked me to insert a cd into the drive, so I clicked cancel and removed the cd that was already in there (and had been in there for weeks.)

in other words, im a moron.

Sounds like it may have been sp2 then. Do you have any error messages in your event log? (right click on my computer, select manage, go to 'event viewer', and look at the application/system logs.)

Also, do a search on microsoft.com's Knowledge base for 'sound stops working after sp2 upgrade'
