These pictures are fantastic, there has got to be some serious math going on here.

Quick and dirty:
They're colorizing black and white images by giving color to a few pixels and extrapolating to nearby pixels with the same grayscale value.

ie this:
gili_m.png

(with some pixels colored in)

becomes this:
gili_res.png
 
I haven't looked at the algorithm, but it seems too perfect. if it is really trying to predict where to spread by similar grayscale values, how can it be that perfect? in addition, look at the eyes in the pics of that kid. unless I just can't see the dots of color in the pupils, why aren't the eyes the same in both pics?

I see no reason to fake something like this, but I bet they touch that shit up like crazy.
