So I got a new car (mazda3 5dr), washed it for the first time today and noticed a nice scratch on the hatch of the back. Can anything be done that is affordable yet feasible?

Get some scratch repair paint. A small bottle from any auto parts store should be fine.

If it's minute, you could probably use the provided touch-up paint to handle it.

I thought about buffing it but is it safe to do so with a new car? I thought you were supposed to wait for the paint job to cure for some period of time before buffing/waxing? Now that I think about it some more the scratch is very superficial, afaik you can't feel it.

not true
paint is cured before you get the car
just buff it and wax it, itll go away. Beware of compound unless you know what youredoing, its very easy to burn thru the clear

it's probably just a clearcoat "smudge" that buffs right out.
