Stem Cell Research

Ok, this thread came about from the Al Gore thread.

I am for stem cell research. My father broke his back about 8 years ago (4 lower lumbars, crushed 1 and fractured the other 3) and because of it was foced to retire as while he is able to still walk he looks like an infant learning to walk, he sort of balances and leans forward and goes...it's scary as hell to watch. He's got 2-9" steel rods and 12-3" screws in his back. He has spine damage obviously.

In spinal cord injuries, stem cell research is one of the leading candidates to be able to heal/cure these types of spinal injuries.

Now just this fact makes me a supporter of stem cell research. My father is a worker, he probably averaged 14hr work days his entire life and he still does an incredible amount of stuff considering his condition and he does most of it w/o any help cause that's just the way he is, he just gets things done and doesn't complain.

This is just one area it could prove incredibly useful. Obviously with Reagan's death recently it also brought out the links to many aging diseases such as Alzhiemers (sp?).

What do you think?

I am in agreement.

Besides it's robots we have to keep our eyes on, not clones.

I'm against embryonic stem cell research. Then again, I'm against abortion and all that shit. To me, it demeans human life; if I was paralyzed or something, I would not want lives to be created and destroyed just because it could help me walk again.

Plus, that research is extremely unstable and fairly dangerous in terms of what moral line could be crossed.

That being said, I am 100% for adult stem cell and other stem cell research that does not involve creating and destroying embryoes... AKA bringing people to life and then killing them. Disagree all you want but that's all I'm saying on THAT part of the subject.

Besides, we've had far more advancement in adult stem cell research and stem cells from umbilical cords. You'd think one would want to focus on the research that has yielded the best results.

And for the record, my grandfather recently died of Parkinson's and my grandmother of bone cancer.... no way in hell I would have supported embryonic stem cell research to keep them alive. And I love my grandparents a hell of a lot.

I think you are completely full of shit here and would have a very different opinion were you in that position...

Hahaha, yes. I am 100% for stem cell research. I fucking hate close-minded decisions that prevent us, as a nation, from evolving (technology wise) to our fullest extent.

The only people against stem cell research or whacked out christians who think the research supports aborting babies. It's not like people are going to go abort babies just to add to the research. And people are going to abort babies no matter what the stupid religous whackos say. So why not use the aborted babies for medical research?

It is a real fucking suprise that such goddam zealots can ruin the quality of life and well being of others just because it doesn't fall in with thier views.

I am 200% for stem cell research. Not only do I support it in principle, I encourage the killing of babies for their precious, precious cells (and for fun).

Seriously, though, I'm all for medical advances that could potentially assist me at cheating death. I'm also in favor of cloning for organ harvesting.

Come on, people! Actual humans with developed conciousnesses are more important than aborted fetuses and lumps of flesh grown in tubes.

That's like asking to look at the results of the Nazi medical experiments. I mean, no one approves of what they did... but why not see if what they found held some value?

And say whatever you want about ruining the quality of life, or me being a whacked out Christian.. think I give a shit about what people on the internet think? It's just an opinion out there; it's not like I think SCIENCE SI EVIL, EVOLUTION IS WRONG AND BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE OR YOU WILL BURRRRRRRRN

Substitute the word Jew instead of babies and you sound a bit like a zealot

This reminds me of another argument. We have bilzillions of religious whackos saying aborting babies is wrong blah blah blah. Well how many of them worry about the quality of life of children who could have aborted but weren't. I have never heard of any of those whackos going into poor income housing areas and helping poor families or orphans.

I spent all of my weekend.. about two weeks ago.. in downtown Jacksonville where over 60% of the residents live below the poverty line. Worked with them to repaint their community centers, rebuild and resod parks and do other various work.

So don't put me in that hypocritical grouping my friend.

I ascribe to that point of view as well, but it's not a terribly persuasive argument. People have this strange hangup on existence being inherently better than nonexistence. Feh.

(ps - for shemale vids, rawr)

all i have to say is clone me a few arias and a few gauges and a few krystal steels and a few brianna banks and i'm all for it

Why would you clone the nastiest of the porn stars?

(I'll take 7 Taylor Rains please, one for each day of the week.)
