Is there a way to lock your registry?

wouldnt users without administrator/power user rights on a 2000/xp system be unable to modify the registry?

you can set rights to the keys in your registry if you've got an NTFS drive, but generally this is a bad idea since many programs write and read settings from the registry all the time.

i believe this computer may have a virus (not my comp btw). everytime IE starts it adds 3 entries to the registry which adaware picks up... it probably has a virus but the dude who owns it doesnt have any antivirus software, i dont have any w/ me, and the comp crashes when ever i try to use housecall :p

What O/S?

Use MSCONFIG to disable the startup group items.

Norton has a free 15-day trial of their A/V software for download.
Download Norton, update Ad-aware's refernce file.
Then run both Norton and Ad-Aware

If either of them give you any shit, run them from safe mode.

Tell your buddy not to be a dumbass and buy some A/v software and keep it up to date.
