ok, so this is gay. apparently you can't sign up for Xbox Live without buying the kit?? WTF?

Meh, just buy it. It comes with a free year and the headset anyway.

Any Xbox you buy now has XBL preloaded on it, just has to be activated.

Right now, the kits come with MechAssault, the headset, and 12 months IIRC.

I bought a wireless adapter for my xbox but it was a giant piece of shit and I couldn't get it to work

to activate it, you need a subscription number.

you will get kicked from a lot servers for not having a headset, although that depends for some of the games.

I think they also have 3-month trials that come with the head set

El Smack, if you need a subscription number, get your hands on one of the free 2-month dealies that come in lots of games. I've collected like 3 of them so far.
