One killed in Madrid suburb blast

One person has been killed and at least six injured in a explosion in a suburb of Madrid.
It occurred during a police operation to arrest suspected militants in the Leganes area, south-west of the Spanish capital.

Police say they are looking for three men of Moroccan origin in connection with last month's Madrid bombings, which killed 191 people.

The man who died in the blast is reported to be a police officer.

MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- As police engaged in a standoff with three suspected North African terrorists Saturday night in a Madrid suburb, an explosion shook the neighborhood.

A policeman was killed and six to nine other people were wounded, said a reporter from CNN partner station CNN+, who was on the scene.

The explosion occurred about 9 p.m. (2 p.m. ET). It was originally reported by state radio to be a "controlled explosion," in which police first move everyone back before exploding a bomb they are unable to defuse, CNN+ reporter Oscar Diaz de Liano said.

Diaz reported that at 9:45 p.m., at least four ambulances arrived at the scene, in addition to others that were already there.

Antena 3 television reported that the suspects had threatened to blow up the four-story building in the southern Madrid suburb of Leganes, about 10 miles south of the capital.

The police were searching for suspects who may be linked to the Madrid commuter train bombings, the Spanish news media reported.

The Web site of a leading Spanish daily newspaper, El Mundo, reported that a number of police officers may have been among the wounded and that a field hospital had been erected on the site.

The manhunt began late Saturday in the Leganes suburb of Madrid.

Earlier reports from the scene said there was a shootout and the suspects subsequently holed up in the building, which contains about 40 apartments.

Two helicopters hovered over it and a large contingent of police surrounded it, Diaz said.

Diaz and other witnesses said many people had been evacuated from nearby buildings

Yeah, they gave in, and look at what happened.

More bombs on the tracks.

Now what are they saying?

C'mon Spain, what do you have to say now?

Pussies.

None of the news networks or papers knows WTF is going on. FOX just reported all 3 suspects dead. Most of the other networks are on the usual "nobody is here it's saturday so put on a pre-recorded show"

FOX: 3 suspects blew themselves up after they were surrounded, 11 police injured, one fatally.

That's gonna piss off the terrorists that their "brothers" died.

MADRID, Spain -- Three suspects in the Madrid railway bombings blew themselves up Saturday in a building while surrounded by police, killing one special forces agent and wounding 11 police officers, the interior minister said.

The blast in Leganes, a southern suburb of Madrid, blew away part of the walls of the building. Police had earlier evacuated residents and cordoned off part of the town.

Interior Minister Angel Acebes said a preliminary investigation indicated three terrorists had died, but he added the number had yet to be confirmed because of the damage to the bodies.

"The special police agents prepared to storm the building and when they started to execute the plan, the terrorists set off a powerful explosion, blowing themselves up," Mr. Acebes said.

"There are three that could have blown themselves up, but the possibility of more is not ruled out," he said.

He said police believe some of the suspects may have carried out the March 11 train bombings that killed 191 people and wounded more than 1,800.

The investigation has focused on the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group, which has links to al Qaeda.

I take no satisfaction from the eventual disproving of the belief that appeasing Islamic extremists will protect you from them.

The thing that I have found interesting is exactly how quickly and conclusively the Spanish authorities have been able to identify and apprehend the suspects. With the original arrests it is obvious that they already were aware of the suspects and had files on them, if not active surveillance.

It is amazing how quickly nations are able to capture or kill suspected terrorists once they are politically motivated to do so.

spain will learn the hard way...like we did.

Man we learned the HARDEST way, 9/11 was a brilliant spectactular attack...wasn't so smart...but it killed 3000, i just hope that other nations wake up before they learn the hard way.

Kill the bad guys first before they kill you. We see to had forgotten that. (due to great democrat leadership and peace symbol waving)
