How do you have CD music play without being interuped by other sounds?

My roommate is wondering how to have music playing on his computer (winxp Pro) and not have other little sounds play over the music. Not hearing sound like MSN message sounds when the CD is playing or other little sounds.
 
It is more than just MSN sounds, that was just a example of a sound.

I hope I didn't butcher that post to bad, I am getting tired.
 
get another sound card or use the onboard sound card. setup a copy of winamp and make the sound driver the onboard sound card. then open up volume controls for both sound cards and mute the primary sound driver.
 
im thinking mute the wave channel on your soundcard and make sure your drive has read digital CD audio enabled
