Comp Prob: CD drives borkened?

ok, i got some weird cd drive problems

whenever i put a cd into my first cd drive (HP cd-writer dvd combo 9900), it takes about 4 minutes to be ready to read the cd. If I into My Computer or try to access the drive at all, my entire computer locks up.


A similar thing happens for my other CD drive. $30 56x nameless CD drive. This one just can't really read CDs period.

So my question is, what's wrong, and what can I do to fix it?

I'm using an Asus mobo (don't have the model #, but its 400mhz ddr compatible, amd procs)
 
Just a thought, go into device manager and uninstall the ide controller that the cd rom is on and reboot, let windows reinstall it on boot up and see if that fixes anything... Only thing I could think of at the moment.
