has anyone ever seen a girl named "Lai"? or used that as a shorter version of her name...?

I checked on google and Lai is a guy name in india or something..
 
Actually, yes. Lots of Laotian and Hmong girls have that name thanks to stupid naming conventions in some refugee camps, even though "lai" is just a qualifier in Lao that means "more" (not even useful as a full word; it's like naming someone "ness" or "ology" or something).

Anyways, it's a Lao/Hmong name for several girls I know.
