With Smith poised to break Sweetness' all time rushing record, the question must once again be posed, who are the greatest backs in the history of professional football (AFL, AAFC included)
Here are my top 5:
1. Jim Brown - He averaged over 135 yards per game. Enough said
2. Walter Payton - Purest running back I've ever seen.
3. Barry Sanders - Had he not retired early, he would hold the record.
4. Gale Sayers - Career tragically cut short, but he was the best back/special teams player in history.
5. Emmitt Smith - Numbers don't lie
Honorable Mentions: Paul Hourning, Red Grange, Tony Dorsett
