Microsoft owns up to "E74" 360 errors, expands warranty

Submitted by: KnightMare @ 03:26 PM | Tuesday, April 14, 2009 | (url: http://arstechnic...)

A popular gaming blog tracked a new kind of Xbox 360 error, the E74, and Microsoft has finally owned up and added the issue to the three-year "Red Ring of Death" warranty. This is a win for consumers, but it's yet another black eye for Microsoft's hardware.

While Xbox 360 systems may be known more for the dreaded "red ring of death" than any other hardware failure, one gaming blog has been tracking the rise of the "E74" error, an issue that causes the console to crash and show a multi-language kill screen. You'll also get a single red section on your system's power button. Microsoft is aware of the problem, and has since amended it's three-year warranty to cover the error.

"Deadliest Catch Alaskan Storm" for Xbox 360 and PC

"Deadliest Catch Alaskan Storm" lets gamers captain their own boat in the frenzied search for an undersea jackpot. Gamers select one of five real crab boats, including the Northwestern, Cornelia Marie and Sea Star -- all featured on the series, or create and customize their own boat. Gamers then recruit and lead their own crew from a roster of twenty real crab fishermen.

The game's realism is enhanced with four real Bering Sea harbors and 34,000 miles of real Bering Sea coastline created from the United States Geological Survey. In addition, "Deadliest Catch Alaskan Storm" is the first video game to feature United States Coast Guard vessels and helicopters.

Lawsuit over Halo 3's incompatibility with the Xbox 360

Submitted by: Hurricane Harold @ 03:48 PM | Thursday, November 22, 2007 | (url: http://www.courth...)

A California man is suing Microsoft and Bungie over the well-known incompatibility with Halo 3 and the Xbox 360. From the complaint:

Defendants knew or had reason to know that Halo 3 was being purchased by consumers for use on an Xbox 360

...

However, Halo 3 does not function with the Xbox 360, and to the contrary, attempted use of Halo 3 consistently causes the Xbox 360 to "crash" "freeze" or "lock up" while the game is being played.

Lawsuits are fun!

Don't buy Tony Hawk PG to get GH III Demo....BURN IT for free!

Submitted by: Rooster! @ 03:45 PM | Thursday, October 18, 2007 | (url: http://www.xbox36...)

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground released to retail this week and, as promised, it features an exclusive Guitar Hero III demo inside. But now we're hearing about a new, hacker'ish way to gain access to the precious GHIII demo without shelling out the cash for Tony Hawk ... simply burn it to a CD.

Over on the Xbox Live the Guide forums, posters are reporting that the GHIII demo has been leaked online and can be downloaded off a popular fileshare website, be burnt to a CD or DVD and played on any Xbox 360. We've already heard of people being successful in their GHIII demo stealing ventures, but others are reporting problems with their 360s reading the burnt media.

Make sure you use media your 360 is compatible with.

First on the agenda is something that may not be overly surprising to all. The Orange Box package has jumped ahead to be the leader of the pack on Meta Critic with a rating of 97 for both PC and the Xbox 360, beating games such as Halo 3, Bioshock, and even all previous Half-Life titles.

[360] Falcons Have Arrived

Submitted by: Evil Light Bulb @ 08:46 PM | Sunday, September 30, 2007 | (url: http://www.dailyt...)

While the arrival of Falcon based 360 has been long expected it seems the transition is finally making its way into stores. Possibly limited to the LE Halo 3 box, Daily Tech surmises reports from the X-Box Forums indicating that 65nm CPU revision is hitting the shelves along with redesigned heatsinks. How effective this proves to be at reducing heat and presumably the failure rate of the 360 remains to be seen. It also remains to be seen whether or not the GPU will be receiving the 65nm treatment anytime soon. It could easily be argued that this would be the more important 'update' for the 360.

A quick guide to aid Falcon searches can also be found at the XBOX forums http://forums.xbox.com/15804553/ShowPost.aspx

GTA IV Delay Due to PS3

Submitted by: Yogi @ 02:33 PM | Friday, August 3, 2007 | (url: http://www.gamasu...)

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter says Take-Two management has "stumbled badly for the first time" with the delay of GTA IV, and said that he believes difficulties porting the game to the PlayStation 3 are to blame and that the company's new green light policy appears to be a failure.

Certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected, especially given the commitment for a simultaneous release on two very different platforms. Xbox 360 receives suprise Backward Compatibility update

Submitted by: Mr Rabies @ 12:20 PM | Friday, July 13, 2007 | (url: http://www.majorn...)

The latest backwards compatibility update is now available over Xbox Live (or will be very soon.) This free update brings the complete list of original Xbox games that you can play on your Xbox 360 to way 300. Remember, your original Xbox games will look better than ever on Xbox 360 running in 720p and 1080i with anti-aliasing. You can also play cross-platform between Xbox 360 and the original Xbox over Xbox Live.

I think Major Nelson may have been drunk while writing this article. Regardless, awesome news. I've been meaning to pick up Guilty Gear XX #Reload for a while. Finally it's backwards compatible.

Konami exec. says Metal Gear Solid may go to other consoles

Submitted by: Spexx @ 06:15 PM | Tuesday, July 10, 2007 | (url: http://www.joysti...)

Konami executive Kazumi Kitaue, head of Konami North America and European ops, dropped a bombshell today saying that Metal Gear Solid 4 may move to other consoles in an attempt to recoup development costs. He also said the PS3 price drop may not turn the ship around. The natural assumption, given the console hardware technology, is that Metal Gear Solid 4 will see its day on the Xbox 360, destroying one of the final feathers in Sony's hat of exclusives.

Joystiq is a pretty damn reliable source, so let me just say, "omfg sweet tits".

4 new Gears of War maps on Xbox Live Thursday. Cost? $10.

Submitted by: Got Haggis? @ 10:33 AM | Tuesday, May 1, 2007 | (url: http://www.majorn...)

The 4 new maps will cost you $10. The good news is that in 4 months, the maps will be free. The screwed up thing is that Epic wanted all 4 maps to be free, but Microsoft forced them to charge for it. Welcome to the future of gaming.
