Mass Effect's new DRM Scheme

Submitted by: KnightMare @ 08:03 PM | Friday, May 9, 2008 | (url: http://kotaku.com...)

When Mass Effect comes to the computer it will not use SecuROM's 10-day periodic re-authentication and instead will use a modification to do only a one-time online authentication, Bioware announced today.

What is the difference between the old PC disc authentication solution and the new online model?

First, authentication of discs has now gone from the physical format to the online format, freeing the need for consumers to have a disc in the drive at all times.

Second, with online authentication consumers now connect to the Internet the first time the game is launched and are required only to reconnect if they are downloading new game content.

Apparently the word from the ESRB at this point is that the upcoming Mass Effect will receive an M rating. In a letter that was posted on the Mass Effect forums, the board cited among other things some Partial Nudity. I should warn you the following excerpt from the letter contains some minor spoilers, but theyre really inconsequential...

One thing thats interesting though, is that the game is actually looking better as it gets closer to release, because were finding new bits of performance and art tweaks here and there. So what weve shown so far isnt quite yet the full experience you can expect from the final product.
