Microsoft's Xbox 360 division loses $31 million

Submitted by: XTasy @ 11:42 AM | Friday, April 24, 2009 | (url: http://www.gamesp...)

For the three months ended March 31, 2009, the software giant announced that company-wide revenues dipped 6 percent year-over-year to $13.65 billion, while operating income was actually up 3 percent to $4.44 billion.

The news was similarly scattered for Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division, which includes the Xbox 360 business. Total revenues for the gaming segment were down less than 2 percent to $1.57 billion, and where the division posted an operating profit of $106 million during last year's second quarter, this year it ran a $31 million loss.

The Inside History of the XBox 360s RRoD

Submitted by: KnightMare @ 07:38 PM | Saturday, September 6, 2008 | (url: http://venturebea...)

This is the unauthorized tale of how Microsoft lost its chance to become the leader in the biggest market it has attacked beyond its twin monopolies in Office and Windows software. Rival game console maker Nintendo out-thought the larger players Microsoft and Sony by designing the Wii game console with a clever, intuitive game controller. Even so, Microsoft could have captured more gamers during this product generation, yet the RROD problem held it back. The Xbox 360s defect problem will go down as one of the worst snafus in consumer electronics history.

Microsoft knew it had flawed machines, but it did not delay its launch because it believed the quality problems would subside over time.

Son: MS may have punched themselves out fo the fight

Some propaganda from Sony .. . .

"I think [the Blu-ray win] is a huge momentum builder for us and I think it is part of why we believe 2008 is going to be a monster year for the PS3. When you incorporate games like Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, and Resistance 2...there will a great mixture of new IP and proven PlayStation brands. I think these factors are timed perfectly because our competition has already leveraged all their big assets in the first couple of years and may have punched themselves out of the fight. We are the [HD movie] standard and now we have the creativity and the products, so I think that formula is going to drive consumers to the PS3."

Don't shoot the messenger...

Lawsuit over Halo 3's incompatibility with the Xbox 360

Submitted by: Hurricane Harold @ 03:48 PM | Thursday, November 22, 2007 | (url: http://www.courth...)

A California man is suing Microsoft and Bungie over the well-known incompatibility with Halo 3 and the Xbox 360. From the complaint:

Defendants knew or had reason to know that Halo 3 was being purchased by consumers for use on an Xbox 360

However, Halo 3 does not function with the Xbox 360, and to the contrary, attempted use of Halo 3 consistently causes the Xbox 360 to "crash" "freeze" or "lock up" while the game is being played.

Lawsuits are fun!

Microsoft warns against Xbox Live sharing

Submitted by: Ostego @ 02:19 PM | Wednesday, October 31, 2007 | (url: http://www.gamesp...)

XBL director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb tells users not to tamper with their gamerscores or jointly own a Live account--or else!

The Xbox Live director of programming stated that those who refused to heed his warnings could find that they permanently lose their account. Hryb says that some gamers are giving in to the temptation to give their account ID and password to people in return for promises to build up their score on games such as Halo 3.

Sony Hon Hai = Cheap PS3's?

Submitted by: DudeofDeath @ 10:27 PM | Saturday, September 15, 2007 | (url: http://www.emsnow...)

A $399 model confirmed? That would really save Sonys butt in the market right now.

"Insiders in the sector said that Sony has cut the selling price of PS3 consoles, and, at the mean time, planned to launch low-price models, with ASUSTeK Computer Inc. and Hon Hai Precision to supply the models".

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., one of the world's largest manufacturers on electronic manufacturing service (EMS) basis, recently joined Sony's supply chain to deliver Play Station 3 (PS3) consoles, according to industry sources.

July NPD: PS3 'price cut' not enough to beat Xbox 360

Submitted by: DudeofDeath @ 10:32 AM | Tuesday, August 28, 2007 | (url:

Mostly, we learn that Sony Computer Entertainment America's SKU altering change -- resulting in sales of 159,000 PlayStation 3s -- around E3 time wasn't enough to push Xbox 360 out of the frame, as Microsoft managed 170,000 sales. Of course, Wii and PlayStation 2 continued their mutual domination using "last generation" hardware, pushing 425,000 and 220,000 respectively. Them's some crazy digits, kids. -

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter says Take-Two management has "stumbled badly for the first time" with the delay of GTA IV, and said that he believes difficulties porting the game to the PlayStation 3 are to blame and that the company's new green light policy appears to be a failure.

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from 22 offices assisted by representatives of the electronic industry today executed 32 federal search warrants in 16 states as part of an investigation into the alleged sale and distribution of illegal modification chips and disc copyright circumvention devices. This investigation represents the largest national enforcement action of its kind targeting this type of illegal activity.

Xbox 360 receives suprise Backward Compatibility update

Submitted by: Mr Rabies @ 12:20 PM | Friday, July 13, 2007 | (url: http://www.majorn...)

The latest backwards compatibility update is now available over Xbox Live (or will be very soon.) This free update brings the complete list of original Xbox games that you can play on your Xbox 360 to way 300. Remember, your original Xbox games will look better than ever on Xbox 360 running in 720p and 1080i with anti-aliasing. You can also play cross-platform between Xbox 360 and the original Xbox over Xbox Live.

I think Major Nelson may have been drunk while writing this article. Regardless, awesome news. I've been meaning to pick up Guilty Gear XX #Reload for a while. Finally it's backwards compatible.
