Microsoft says No Blu-Ray for XBox 360

Submitted by: DudeofDeath @ 08:30 AM | Thursday, March 13, 2008 | (url: http://www.reuter...)

Reuters reports that Microsoft isn't in talks with Sony over Blu-Ray, and that Microsoft is investing more time on the digital aspects of distribution instead of the physical. This was indicated by statements from Aaron Greenburg. Greenburg went on to say that the 360 was still supply-constrained going into the month of February.

Looks like rival Sony asked for more money than Microsoft wanted to pay for the Blu-ray drive.

According to the Financial Times, Sony Electronics' US President, Stan Glasgow, has confirmed that the company is in talks with Microsoft in reference to offering a Blu-ray drive for the latter company's console.

Xbox 360 failure rate at 16%, warranty provider reports

Submitted by: succi @ 02:13 PM | Thursday, February 14, 2008 | (url: http://binarybons...)

Working with a sufficient sample size of over 1,000 claims, SquareTrade, a warranty seller, has projected the Xbox 360 failure rate at 16.4% -- and likely climbing. Comparatively, the company reports failure rates hovering around 3% for PlayStation 3 and Wii, based on less accurate sample sizes numbering in the hundreds. SquareTrade found that the ghoulish "Red Ring of Death" accounted for 60% of hardware failures it's documented...

Lawsuit over Halo 3's incompatibility with the Xbox 360

Submitted by: Hurricane Harold @ 03:48 PM | Thursday, November 22, 2007 | (url: http://www.courth...)

A California man is suing Microsoft and Bungie over the well-known incompatibility with Halo 3 and the Xbox 360. From the complaint:

Defendants knew or had reason to know that Halo 3 was being purchased by consumers for use on an Xbox 360

...

However, Halo 3 does not function with the Xbox 360, and to the contrary, attempted use of Halo 3 consistently causes the Xbox 360 to "crash" "freeze" or "lock up" while the game is being played.

Lawsuits are fun!

[360] Nov 21 - Dec 21 Halo 3 Mailed Free With Console Purchase

Submitted by: Evil Light Bulb @ 02:27 PM | Friday, November 16, 2007 | (url: http://www.xbox.c...)

It looks like Microsoft is satisfied with Halo 3 sales and is ready to use its 'Blockbuster' to move try and move more consoles as opposed to simply selling more copies. "You must purchase a new Xbox 360 system between November 21, 2007, and December 21, 2007, establish a new Xbox LIVE Account, then register on the promotion website on or before December 21, 2007. Hard drive, Windows Live ID, and high speed Internet access required for Xbox LIVE account." So this will be excluding the Tard Pack Arcade 360s.

Xbox 360 Tops PS3 in Japan

Submitted by: KillerONE @ 12:21 PM | Friday, November 9, 2007 | (url: http://xbox360.ig...)

Microsoft is having one impressive week over in Japan. In addition to grabbing the second slot in the Media Create top 50 sales charts with Ace Combat 6, the 360 sold 17,673 hardware units in one week alone. With the new sales, the system has at last crossed the 500,000 sold mark, which is something that the original Xbox never did.

But more than that, this is what we're sure will keep people talking. The 17,673 hardware units was enough for the 360 to beat both the PS2 and PS3! Yes, the 360 is now the second hottest console in Japan (next to the Wii).

Microsoft warns against Xbox Live sharing

Submitted by: Ostego @ 02:19 PM | Wednesday, October 31, 2007 | (url: http://www.gamesp...)

XBL director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb tells users not to tamper with their gamerscores or jointly own a Live account--or else!

The Xbox Live director of programming stated that those who refused to heed his warnings could find that they permanently lose their account. Hryb says that some gamers are giving in to the temptation to give their account ID and password to people in return for promises to build up their score on games such as Halo 3.

New 360 Bundles For Christmas?

Submitted by: DudeofDeath @ 12:05 PM | Thursday, September 27, 2007 | (url: http://www.next-g...)

Best Buys website is now listing two new Xbox 360 bundles that are expected to ship for the holiday season.

The most interesting suggestion, however, is a new Xbox 360 Core model that will arrive "at the end of October," sporting a HDMI port, wireless controller, 256MB memory card, and five XBLA arcade games (Boom-Boom Rocket, Pac-man, Uno, Feeding Frenzy, and Luxor 2) on a single disc. Even better is that, according to rumors, the package will carry the standard Core price of $279.99.

Epic Confirms No Unreal Tournament 3 PC-to-PS3 Online

Submitted by: DudeofDeath @ 09:41 AM | Wednesday, September 26, 2007 | (url: http://www.shackn...)

Much ado has been made about the potential presence of cross-platform play in Epic Games' upcoming multiplayer-heavy shooter Unreal Tournament 3 (PC, PS3, X360). The most likely compatible platforms have been PC and PlayStation 3, as the Xbox 360 version has taken a development backseat and the PS3's approach to network architecture is more conducive to the kind of freedom Epic would want for such a service. - www.shacknews.com
