Worlds First hybrid Blu-ray and DVD Disc Combo

Great news for those who have both Blu-ray and DVDs in the house; Infinity Storage Media has released the first hybrid Blu-ray and DVD disc in Japan.

The new media has a total storage capacity of 33.5GB and is compatible with existing DVD and Blu-ray players. The biggest advantage of the new media is backward compatibility - you can play it on your DVD or Blu-ray player.

Toshiba Corp is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high definition DVDs, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp, a company source said on Saturday.

Universal ends HD-DVD support.

The war for your hard earned HD movie dollars continues, and HD-DVD sales are not as far behind Blu-Ray sales as recent articles may have led you to believe.

According to stats cited by the HD DVD Group, which are based on recent data from Nielsen Videoscan, Universal, Warner and Toshiba, HD DVD titles are now at 998,059 units sold, representing less-than 2,000 units shy of Blu-rays announced figures.

Apparently, Microsoft has already begun shipping the newly configured Xbox 360s for retail with a quieter DVD drive, called the "BenQ VAD6038 drive." And allegedly, this new drive means that 360 owners now don't have to hear an airplane take off each time they start up a game of Gears of War or whatever else it is people play on their 360.
