japan ruined seafood and is going to kill us all

At 530 sieverts, a person could die from even brief exposure, highlighting the difficulties ahead as the government and Tepco grope their way toward dismantling all three reactors crippled by the March 2011 disaster.

Tepco also announced that, based on its analysis of images taken by a remote-controlled camera, that there is a 2-meter hole in the metal grating under the pressure vessel in the reactors primary containment vessel. It also thinks part of the grating is warped.

The hole could have been caused when the fuel escaped the pressure vessel after the mega-quake and massive tsunami triggered a station blackout that crippled the plants ability to cool the reactors.

The searing radiation level, described by some experts as unimaginable, far exceeds the previous high of 73 sieverts per hour at the reactor.

An official of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences said medical professionals have never considered dealing with this level of radiation in their work.

According to the institute, 4 sieverts of radiation exposure would kill 1 in 2 people.

Experts say 1,000 millisieverts, or 1 sievert, could lead to infertility, loss of hair and cataracts, while exposure to doses above 100 millisieverts increases the risk of cancer.

they sendin a robot in that'll explode in 2 hours due to the radiation levels to check on stuff

Claque spiked in lookups on January 23, 2017, following stories about the enthusiastic applause for Donald Trump when he visited CIA headquarters. It was revealed that many of those in attendance were not CIA staff, but Trump supporters invited for the occasion. Trump had also hired actors to applaud during the announcement of his candidacy.

Make Dragons Great Again

Submitted by: Goshin @ 01:26 PM | Friday, September 30, 2016 | (url: http://www.bbc.co...)

"Reptiles can master many problems that mammals can," says Gordon Burghardt of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. "Complex problem-solving, reversal learning, social learning, complex sociality, tool use and individual recognition have all been discovered."

Some of the more intelligent reptiles are the larger species with correspondingly large brains, such as crocodiles and monitor lizards. Another potential contributor to intelligence is longevity, which has also been associated with bigger brains. Dragons are certainly not lacking in size, but what about lifespan?

Many dragons of legend are eternal, ageless creatures, whose lives can only be ended at the hands of a burly hero with a big sword. While actual immortality is unlikely, reptiles like giant tortoises and tuataras can clock up well over a century. The key to such extended lives could be a slow pace and a correspondingly slow metabolism.

Bowerbirds are a different matter. To attract females, male bowerbirds line the floors of their "bowers" with all sorts of treasures, albeit humbler ones than those found in a dragon's lair. Instead of jewels and coins, bowerbirds hoard berries and pieces of broken glass.

Our dragons are shaping up nicely. So far we have prehistoric reptiles, maybe a sister group to the giant pterosaurs or giant snakes, with advanced cognitive abilities to match their size and longevity, and a complex mating system based on the procurement of shiny, metallic objects.

Imagine an evolutionary convergence that bestows analogous chemical weaponry on an enormous reptile. Two glands in this creature's neck secrete the necessary solution, and when they mix in the back of its throat, a jet of gas and scalding liquid is expelled from its mouth.

Such a creature is highly implausible, of course, but then so are bombardier beetles.

New Jersey May Ban Coffee and Big Macs While Driving

Submitted by: Mr Jimmy Pop @ 08:06 PM | Monday, August 8, 2016 | (url: http://www.msn.co...)

Call it a legislative overreach, straight to your cars cupholder: Drinking coffee behind the wheel could be outlawed in New Jersey under a proposed distracted-driving law. The stogie that Tony Soprano lights and puffs on the way to his suburban manse? Snuffed out for good as well.

The bill under consideration in the state legislature would prohibit any activity unrelated to the actual operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle on a public road or highway.

If that sounds broader than the barn you crash into after spilling McDonalds java in your lap, it is. Like the federal government and most states, New Jersey already takes a view of distracted driving thats darker than French Roast. According to the states Office of the Attorney General, inattentive drivers were responsible for nearly 800,000 crashes in the state between 2010 and 2014, including 3,179 deaths in 2014 alone.

Studies talk about how distracted driving is the number-one cause of accidents, Assemblyman John Wisniewski, the bills co-sponsor, told NewJersey.com. We ought to be able to stop it.

Because text messaging is a trifecta of distraction, requiring visual, manual and cognitive attention, New Jersey is one of 46 states and the District of Columbia that have outlawed driver texting. The feds brandished an effective stick, threatening to withhold 25 percent of federal highway funds to states that didn't fall in line.

I would argue Coffee contributes to safety.

New United Arab Emirates Law Makes Using Tor, VPNs, and Proxies Illegal

Submitted by: Odio @ 02:31 PM | Friday, August 5, 2016 | (url: http://www.ibtime...)

A new murky law amended by UAE President dictates that people who use any method of personal security to ensure privacy on the internet will be fined or imprisoned.
According to Emirates24/7, UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued a significant number of changes to federal laws and one in particular is considerably concerning. The law in question is an amendment made to Federal Law No. 12/2016 and Federal Law No. 5/2012 on combating information technology crimes.
The most relevant change is what follows
Whoever uses a fraudulent computer network protocol address (IP address) by using a false address or a third-party address by any other means for the purpose of committing a crime or preventing its discovery, shall be punished by temporary imprisonment and a fine of no less than Dh500,000 and not exceeding Dh2,000,000, or either of these two penalties.
In laymans terms, the new law criminalizes those who use IP-masking technologies like VPNs, proxies, Tor, I2P, or others and risk going to jail, or additional fines between $135,000 and $545,000.
The purpose of this law, According to Softpedia, is to keep citizens of the United Arab Emirates from masking their real identity and making it appear as if they were located somewhere across the globe outside of the UAE. Keeping citizens from masking their IP address helps prevent cybercrime, for one. But secondly, it would both discourage and scare users from using VPNs or proxies for accessing services blocked in the country, such Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, Skype and others
Article 2 of the law states that the law shall be published in the Official Gazette and shall come into effect the day following publication.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Police Department lost its third police chief in eight days as it struggles with allegations that a number of officers had sex with a teenage prostitute and exchanged racist text messages.

Mayor Libby Schaaf said acting Police Chief Paul Figueroa was on the job for two days before stepping down on Friday but said his decision was not connected to the two scandals.

However, she denounced the department's "toxic, macho culture" and vowed to root out "the bad apples."

"As the mayor of Oakland, I'm here to run a police department, not a frat house," Schaaf said at a news conference Friday evening.

Schaaf said she will not immediately appoint an acting or interim chief. Instead, the command staff will report to City Administrator Sabrina Landreth, who will be responsible for personnel and disciplinary decisions.

"This is the appropriate time to install civilian oversight in this police department," Schaaf said. "I want to assure the citizens of Oakland that we are hell bent on rooting out this disgusting culture."

Yes, You Can Run Windows 95 on an Xbox One

Submitted by: Odio @ 04:08 PM | Saturday, May 21, 2016 | (url: http://www.popula...)

What better use for brand new technology than to use it to boot up some old software? Duke Nukem 3D is always a solid choice. But what about when the ability to play Duke Nukem 3D isn't enough? Well then, you need to install Windows 95, and then play Duke through that. Luckily, thanks to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, your dream can come true on the Xbox One.

The Anniversary Update is geared towards making the Xbox One more friendly to legacy apps. In fact, it makes it so friendly that this YouTuber was able to port the Dosbox emulator into the system through it, and then use Dosbox to run Windows 95, and then use Windows 95 to play Duke Nukem 3D.

While it's unlikely that this port will make it into the Xbox Marketplace, seeing that old startup bar, and then Duke's face, shows that the Anniversary Update could allow for things Microsoft never really intended. And things there is maybe not a very good reason to ever actually do, besides for laughs.

Ending the R-word: Ban it or understand it?

Every time Ellen Seidman hears the word "retarded," she worries for her 9-year-old son, Max, who has cerebral palsy.

She wonders if people will ever respect him, or see him as an equal.

President Obama passed Rosa's Law in 2010, which eliminates the use of the words "retarded" and "retardation" in federal health, education and labor laws.

we found new humans

Submitted by: Goshin @ 08:34 PM | Monday, November 16, 2015 | (url: http://news.natio...)

The analysis of a fossil tooth from Siberia reveals that a mysterious people known as Denisovans, discovered a mere five years ago, persisted for tens of thousands of years alongside modern humans and Neanderthals.

The find underscores that our Homo sapiens ancestors shared the Eurasian continent with other human-like populations. For hundreds of thousands of years, modern humans lived alongside Neanderthals, a sister hominid species that died out about 40,000 years ago. Denisovans appear to have shared some of that territory as well.

The new study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, marks an important step in scientists understanding of where Denisovans fit in the human family tree.

In 2010, teams of geneticists and anthropologists led by Svante Pbo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology announced strange DNA sequences recovered from a finger bone and molar found in the remote Denisova cave, in Siberias Altai Mountains.

The DNA from the previously analyzed finger bone and tooth show that Denisovans left their mark on modern humans, contributing about five percent of the genome of modern Melanesians, who live in Papua New Guinea and other parts of the Pacific.

In 2010, researchers found a second wisdom tooth, buried deep in the back of the cave. The dental analysis fell to Bence Viola, an anthropologist of the University of Toronto who had examined the first Denisovan wisdom tooth and initially mistook it for the tooth of a cave bear, given its size and huge, splayed roots.

Black Dude Saves Ducklings

Submitted by: Mr Jimmy Pop @ 03:54 PM | Sunday, November 15, 2015 | (url: http://www.feelgo...)

Dallas Cowboys offensive guard Leonard Davis saved a different type of birdie during the Dallas Cowboys annual Sponsor Appreciation Golf Tournament Wednesday.

Davis, ever an animal-loving gentle giant, came to the rescue of nearly a dozen baby ducks stranded in a sand bunker on the 11th Hole. Davis walked into the bunker and picked up the baby ducks one-by-one and placed them gingerly on the fairway.

Quickly, the little ducks scurried back to their mother -- who previously, and very quickly, had left the sand trap as the 6 foot 6 inch, 360-pound lineman approached.

This wasnt the first time Davis has helped stranded animals. Following the same golf tournament back in 2007, Davis first year with the Cowboys, he flew back to Arizona and used his own tractor to help free a horse that was stuck in mud.

Worlds first successful cock transplant

Submitted by: Odio @ 03:36 PM | Friday, March 13, 2015 | (url: http://www.sun.ac...)

In a ground-breaking operation, a team of pioneering surgeons from Stellenbosch University (SU) and Tygerberg Hospital performed the first successful penile transplant in the world.

The marathon nine-hour operation, led by Prof Andr van der Merwe, head of SU's Division of Urology, was performed on 11 December 2014 at Tygerberg Hospital in Bellville, Cape Town. This is the second time that this type of procedure was attempted, but the first time in history that a successful long-term result was achieved.

"South Africa remains at the forefront of medical progress," says Prof Jimmy Volmink, Dean of SU's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS). "This procedure is another excellent example of how medical research, technical know-how and patient-centred care can be combined in the quest to relieve human suffering. It shows what can be achieved through effective partnerships between academic institutions and government health services."

Van der Merwe was assisted by Prof Frank Graewe, head of the Division of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery at SU FMHS, Prof Rafique Moosa, head of the FMHS Department of Medicine, transplant coordinators, anaesthetists, theatre nurses, a psychologist, an ethicist and other support staff.

The patient, whose identity is being protected for ethical reasons, has made a full recovery and has regained all function in the newly transplanted organ.

"Our goal was that he would be fully functional at two years and we are very surprised by his rapid recovery," says Van der Merwe. The end result of the transplant was the restoration of all the patient's urinary and reproductive functions.

"It's a massive breakthrough. We've proved that it can be done we can give someone an organ that is just as good as the one that he had," says Graewe. "It was a privilege to be part of this first successful penis transplant in the world."

Top Gear Host Jeremy Clarkson Suspended for 'hitting producer'

Submitted by: narmF @ 06:45 PM | Wednesday, March 11, 2015 | (url: http://www.cnn.co...)

London (CNN)Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was suspended for allegedly hitting a producer, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

The BBC said Clarkson, one of the corporation's highest earners, had "a fracas with a BBC producer" in a statement released yesterday.

"Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended pending an investigation," they said. "No one else has been suspended. Top Gear will not be broadcast this Sunday." The BBC reported that the next two episodes, and possibly the third and final show of the series, will not be aired.

Fans of the presenter expressed dismay at the decision. At the time of writing, more than 300,000 people have signed a petition seeking his reinstatement.

Using the hashtag #BringBackClarkson, which is trending worldwide, some Twitter users lamented that the show would not be the same without him.
